FBC Elders

These brothers and sisters were nominated and affirmed by the partners at FBC to serve as elders. They help provide vision and leadership within the church, and serve in various roles. Scroll down to learn more about them!

Elder Bios


  • cheryl bowhay

    • What is your current day job?  I am an LPN in an Adult Family Home. I care for 5 adults from age 70 to 98.
    • How long have you lived in Whatcom County, and what do you like about living here? I grew up in Whatcom County and went to FBC as a toddler through 12 years old. Then after my husband and I returned "home" after 26 years, I have been privileged to be among the evergreens and close to mountains and salt water and the people here!
    • What's one thing you love about serving at FBC? I love to get to know all the people that come to FBC, to help them to grow in the Lord and help them feel at home in our church family. 
    • In the evening, would you rather play a game, visit a relative, watch a  movie, or read? Play a game. 
    • What is your favorite thing about your career? To be able to help people be the best they can be, to feel loved and worthwhile.
    • What's your favorite family recipe? Chicken dumplings or noodles.
  • Mel Dejong (treasurer, vice moderator)

    • What is your current day job? Family support specialist.
    • What do you love most about FBC? I love people's hearts here. I know that God's heart is for them to accomplish great things for his kingdom here at FBC.
    • How long have you lived in Whatcom County, and what do you like about living here? Born and raised in Whatcom County. I have considered it my home for 60 years. I love the strong feeling of community here. 
    • What was your favorite subject in school? History.
    • What is your favorite book to read? The next one.
    • If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Tour Smithsonian.
  • Jeff flint (Pastor)

    • What do you love most about FBC? The variety of people and happenings around FBC - it's never a dull moment. It's not boring!
    • How long have you lived in Whatcom County, and what do you like about living here? 17.5 years. I love the beauty of creation, and the sense of community in our neighborhood and school.
    • What three items would you take with you on a deserted island? Trombone, Bible, water purifying system.
    • What is the most daring thing you've ever done? Become a pastor.
    • What is your favorite book to read? The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.
  • John lovell (moderator)

    • What is your current day job? Technology Director, Access 4 Learning Community
    • How long have you lived in Whatcom County, and what do you like about living here? 20 years, I love the climate and hiking trails.
    • What's one thing you love about serving at FBC? Promoting a culture of love, caring, safety, and forgiveness.
    • What's the most daring thing you've ever done? Cross an ice field ill-prepared. Fortunately someone caught me before I hit the rocks.
    • If you had a warning label, what would yours say? Caution: I want to hug you.
  • James parker (Clerk)

    • What is your current day job? Retired.
    • What do you love most about FBC? Its work with the homeless community in Bellingham.
    • How long have you lived in Whatcom County, and what do you like about living here? Moved to Bellingham in April 2017. I am on vacation for the rest of my life, except for what I have committed to FBC.
    • What are your hobbies? Sight-seeing, traveling, watching ice hockey.
    • What's the most daring thing you've ever done? Gone up in a helicopter over a volcano.
    • If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Argue a religion case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Jessica parks (worship pastor)

    • What is your current day job? Media Producer at Faithlife.
    • What do you love most about FBC? FBC's heart for the city of Bellingham - bringing the empowering love of Jesus to this wonderful city.
    • How long have you lived in Whatcom County, and what do you like about living here? Almost 4 years. I love the outdoors, but even more I love the small-town feel of Bellingham.
    • If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Five Guys Burger and Fries. Yum! (It would also be a short life though!)
    • If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Be Wonder Woman.

    • What is your current day job? Language Editor in Content Innovation at Faithlife. 
    • How long have you lived in Whatcom County, and what do you like about living here? Almost 4 years. I love the outdoors. The Cascades are an amazing place to explore.
    • What's one thing you love about serving at FBC? I love the people. There are People here who love to serve the community. I love that I get to help these people serve the community better.
